day trip

With summer approaching and school coming to a close we were able to start exploring today.  I must say that I've never been to the farm we visited this morning and I have lived in this area my whole life.  What a treat when you can find a bit of magic right out your own backdoor.  Kline Creek Farm is a working farm that has been setup to model how the farm looked and ran in the 1890's.  The summer kitchen was in full swing on the property and women dressed in 1890's attire were busy baking cinnamon rolls.  The beans took in story time under the tree and were able to select books that once belonged to the Kline children.  After helping gather eggs from the chicken coop the beans learned about how all the meals that are made daily on the farm come only from what they grow and raise.  A lesson we've been talking about as my bean boy collected greens from our garden to make a salad for dinner last night. The flower gardens were packed with Irises, Columbines, ferns, Alliums and Corydalises.  In the center of the property they had a large vegetable garden growing where all of the food harvested goes to feed the workers and volunteers who run the farm.

A place to clear the head and take in a slower pace.  Something I have been needing with all of the busy that surrounds daily life.  Hope you find a little bit of magic this week too.  Happy June!

  26. A great idea, Nicole. It's such a good thing when children understand where there food comes from and even better when they have a chance to grow or harvest it. You're a great mom to give your little ones this experience from early in life. They will always remember it and carry it through as they get older.

  28. What a great day trip! I love going to old reenactment villages and farms to take a trip back in time! It's all so fascinating and makes me realize how spoiled we are today. Is that a good thing? Perhaps if we had less time for distraction and worked with our hands more we might, just might feel more of a sense of satisfaction and happiness? Well anyway, it's just a thought! Thanks for taking me along on the trip via all your wonderful photos!
    Hugs,
    Beth

  29. Dear Nicole, sounds like the beans and you had a fun day on the farm! I think it is so important to show kids how vegetables are grown and life stock is raised so that they have an idea how dinner gets on the table, other than buying it from the grocery store :-). I love the farm house, sooo... beautiful! And the surrounding ornamental gardens are very pretty, too. I admire their dense lush planting style.
Wishing you a great rest of the week!

  30. What a beautiful farm. Even the interior is alluring. I bet the kids were thrilled with their adventure. I love finding awesome (and educational) places in our "backyard", too.
We have a vocational school near by, that has animals and does open days often; we take The Cute there to see the baby animals but once she is older, we will visit farms and pick fruit. :)

It's amazing how much care is in the farm you visited - free range animals and even flowers along the paths. Fantastic!

  32. What a beautiful farm, Nicole! The beans must have had a wonderful time checking everything out! The gardens are really pretty. My Dad grew up on a working farm like this - he loved to tell us stories....My favorite book that describes life on a working farm is 'Farmer Boy', by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It's so nice to teach children where food really comes from! I hope your summer is full of fun and exploration! xo Karen

  49. My kids are a bit older (all boys) 16, 13 and 10, but we went there last year for a rare livestock breeds show. My oldest wants to be a wildlife biologist/zoologist. They all really loved it and so did I. It's great for the kids to see how people lived in the 1800s. I'm only 40, but was born in Europe and we still had an outhouse. In my short life, It seems like I've lived in 2 different centuries. LOL
