phones and old things

One of these will be making its way into our living room.  Do you remember phones like this?  My folks always had one phone in the kitchen where the six of us received all of our calls.  In this day and age it brings me peace of mind to have a phone that stays in one place.   In the past I have thought about quitting my blog as I'm not a huge believer in too much technology.  A contradiction I know, but the old ways just seem to sit better with me.  I want my beans to feel the turn of a pencil sharpener, engage in imaginary play without screens, and learn about traditions and customs of the past.  Ironically, it is through blogging that I've met so many wonderful people that feel the same way.  Maybe it's a shift in what we value and a slight movement to slow down.  But after reading an article recently published in the Chicago Tribune about the "making movement," I have to believe that people are looking to keep the past alive.

There is a shop by my house that has the most fantastic and affordable antiques.  It is one of those places that can completely transport you as it has everything and anything you can imagine.  With the weather shifting in Chicago and snow in the forecast my energy has been redirected inside.  Cozy spaces and vintage holiday warmth is what I seek!

I came home with a framed oil painting for my girls' room.  It was only 17 dollars.  A steal if you ask me and it looks so pretty in their space.  A fun folk art tray and 5 glass vintage ornaments to add to my collection.  The last piece I purchased was a little winter print for 10 dollars.  It is by Grandma Moses and is too sweet for words.  I look forward to finding the perfect spot for it this season.

So old things are good and new things are good.  I suppose it's finding the right balance with it all.

Thank you for inspiring and sharing the magic friends!

Happy Making, Baking, and Growing!

  2. I feel the same way about technology, yet I have found so many like minded souls through blogging which I love, it has been such a wonderful connection for me. We don't watch TV but we love DVD's. And I don't use a mobile phone, yet I feel the pull by those around me to get one so I can be more contactable. You are so right about there being a good balance, something I strive for each day. Have a wonderful weekend Beautiful friend xoxo

  3. We still have that kind of phone at home:) I try to balance between old and new, for example I do not have a modern type of mobile, I find them too stressing. But blogging I love, I have met so many nice people through blogging.

  6. Well managed technology is a good thing, it has certainly ensured I can keep my job as I am able to remote onto the office server & work from home. This gives me the advantage of keeping my much loved job & being close to my boys ate the same time. I joined facebook when my eldest son started uni & it brings me so much pleasure to see the photos he posts on there as much as I enjoy his phone calls. So well managed it can be a good thing. My garden & crafts bring me so much pleasure as they are a link to my past. My paternal grandfather was a great gardener, an great uncle used to crochet & a great, great grandfather was a tailor. You have such fabulous finds there, I just adore the winter scene. xx

  10. You had me at, "the turn of a pencil sharpener." Sigh. Such wisdom for one so young.

  11. For my part, I like to put old thing in new thing, like a new ornament for an old paint.
And it is a good thing to keep the memory of the past.
And a good thing to teach to our kids.
    Miss.

  12. Good Morning, Nicole. My grandparents had a phone like these AND it was a party line! I remember how heavy it was!
I love your vintage ornaments and the 2 sweet art pieces. I often choose a book by its vintage illustrated cover! Wishing you and yours a delightful weekend. Mildred

  13. I love old things, I have a house full of antiques even though that is really unheard of in Florida. I have keep sakes form family and friends long gone. I feel centered and in a better place when I am surrounded by things from the past. Lovely finds my friend,

  14. I have a phone like that and I use it strictly for decoration. So much fun. That is the kind of phone I grew up with, too! We were on a "party line" and everyone always listened in to hear the local gossip. lol
Love that winter painting-so cute! xo Diana

  16. I love the old phones. My grandparents have one that is really old...the kind that you have to hold the ear piece while talking into the mouth piece :)

You found some lovely items, Nicole, and those ornaments are so pretty. Happy weekend to you! Hugs

  17. That winter print is adorable, and those glass baubles are just perfect!!! My hubby thinks I'm crazy when I come home with old baubles, but they are just so much more christmasy and heartwarming somehow! We had a phone like that ehen I was little, it was bottle green, I used to love playing with the dial, which sometimes resulted in phone calls to strangers... oops! Enjoy your treasures!!! xxx

  20. I find vintage rotary phones so charming and that is is just so cool. Not to mention, it'll add such character to your living room. I love that you want your beans to experience the "technology" of the past. It was good enough for us and our parents :) That painting is a steal indeed! Have a marvelous weekend Nicole! Stay warm!

  23. We have a phone like that! It belonged to my sister in law and now we have it. It's known as "the vicarage phone" as it looks like it belongs in one!! It's so loud when it rings, we unplugged it when we've had newborns, made them jump a mile, haha! I love your thrifted finds, wonderful! Xxxx

  24. Yes, I grew up with a rotary dial phone. So odd to think of it as "antique". Nice needlepoint - Judy has recently taken it up as a new hobby of hers.

  25. Technology, love it or loathe it, it seems that it is here to stay. I have a basic mobile phone, no Ig or facebook for me. We don't have hundreds of TV channels to watch, just the basics, and there is not much worth watching on those so we all read alot.
I love the vintage Christmas ornament.
Have a fabulous weekend my friend.

  26. lovely~~ i have a few old pieces in my home too, including a working rotary phone (although i did get rid of my landline). i was telling my husband something similar too... that if we ever have kids i want them to grow up appreciating things in a less connected world. it's too much right now.. that's why i kept saying i wanted to live on a farm.. to appreciate the animals and the food we grow.. i'm still trying to find the right balance for our lives too to be less connected. i don't think it's terribly but we could be better! have a lovely weekend~~

  27. I agree...I love history and antiques. We do not have cell phones and the computer I think is good if not overused. I have those antique Christmas decorations, but as we are slowing down and down-sizing I will be giving mine away so someone else can admire and use them.

  28. Love, love, love this post! And I can relate to how you feel about technology. . . I go back and forth between keeping a journal/scrapbook and keeping a blog. In fact I've deleted my blog(s) more often than I care to remember. There' something about the instantaneous ability to put words to a photo that keeps me blogging. Not to mention that it’s better for the environment – no ink and paper being used. LOL
My home is filled with antiques . . . they certainly add an element of warmth. I absolutely love your treasures, especially the phone. I didn’t even realize rotary phones still worked (we haven’t had a house phone in years).

I suppose when all is said and done, it’s all about balance. :- ) Have a wonderful weekend, Nicole.

  33. I love that phone! I have two newer versions of them (via Crosleyradio.com), but my mom stills has an original kettle phone, that was past down. It still works and has a cloth covered cord! Maybe I am just too sentimental, but I love old stuff. The nostalgic of it all I find exciting! Great finds on those art pieces. :)

  34. We had the same phone! Rotary. We also had a party line where every household (I believe there were 6) had a different ring. Ours was two long and two short, and whenever the phone rang everyone stopped what they were doing to listen if it was ours and then we'd all race to answer it. After working in an office for many years and hearing that gentle blip of a phone ringing, I visited my parents once and didn't even recognize the ring of their phone!! I had been desensitized :( It's nice to hear you're keeping things real in your family Nicole. I love that last winter scene ... it looks French Canadian ;) Wendy x

  35. I absolutely agree that it is important to understand what makes things tick, so to speak. After all, when you get right down to it, new age technology is pretty fragile in many ways(consider how computers can be crashed), etc., and almost every appliance or piece of machinery we use has some sort of computer that makes it function. I admire you for encouraging your children to explore and check these things out. I certainly do remember those old telephones! We had something similar when I was a little girl, cords and all and everyone was on a party line with several others and we were all quite satisfied just to be able to stay in contact, neighbor to neighbor, family to family. My husband and I still have one land line phone hanging on our kitchen wall and it is the only one that works when our power goes out and we love it. I have seen so many technological advances in my lifetime and, yes, that is good in its own way. Still, it is nice to understand and remember how we got this far, one step at a time!

  37. So glad to have you back Nicole :) Thanks for visiting. Love all your finds--Grandma Moses is from our neck of the woods. I hear what you're saying about slowing down--so hard to do in this technological age. My daughter Gracie just bought a dial phone; we've yet to plug it in, but she's very excited. Hope your week-end is blessed.

  39. These are great finds, Nicole. I'm so glad you're showing your children a simpler way of life. It's very important and if we all do it, they will be a strong generation of adults someday.

  40. I have a bakerlite phone like that but it is not plugged in. The other day the girls asked which end do you talk through and I thought there is a generation gap for you!!! Pretty baubles. Jo x

  41. I love old things, too, mainly because I remember having them around (personally) or they were family heirlooms. Hey, I really appreciate your comment about encouraging your beans to use pen and paper and their imaginations. Please remember to encourage them to use cursive writing when they get a little older. A lot of schools are eliminating it because of time constraints but it REALLY is important, not just to read old manuscripts. It's shown to improve brain development in the areas of thinking, language and working memory. It also stimulates brain synapses and helps both sides of the brain to work together. Ok, enough of the Retired Teacher Rant!! Beautiful pieces. Enjoy them and stay warm this week!

  42. I LOVE your vintage finds! There is surely a place for tradition in our lives. You are such a super mom with your beans!! Good imagination is the basis for the development of critical thinking skills. I had to laugh looking at the phone. I can remember growing up we had one phone smack in the middle of the kitchen. No long lingering convos there! My dad would yell from the living room, Are you talking to that boy again? time to get off the phone!! Been married to that boy for 34 years this December! Have a great week friend!

  43. Gosh, we truly are kindred spirits! I feel the exact same way about technology and then again, I have met love people, YOU!, through blogging. Yeah....you're so right...finding a balance. Your finds are absolutely my taste. How lovely it would be to meet for tea. If only! xoxoxoxoxo Jen

  44. There is something special in the sharing of "making" skills. Passing on family stories from olden days is related. It all connects children to a solid past, a good foundation.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oddly enough have never felt nostalgic for the past, but then I do like things with history. We have a phone just like the one in your picture in our front hallway. It works too. Love the seasonal painting and the old ornaments. I collect old ornaments as well, but I have to say my favourite decorations are the ones my son made many, many years ago now. They are priceless and irreplaceable.

  46. Hi Nicole,

Couldn't agree with you more - I too love old things and am too much of a hoarder sometimes ( according to my husband) I like my new/old phone sitting on my desk, like the black one and it has push buttons.
Your vintage Christmas decorations and the little winter print for your girls are wonderful.
    Happy new week
    hugs

  48. I have the exact same phone in my living room!!! Something that Stu found in an old building that was about to be demolished and it is such a beautiful statement piece. Alexander loves playing with it as it makes that "ding" sound.

  49. Great finds! How nice to have a shop like that nearby. I LOVE the little winter picture.
We had a rotary phone growing up and I still remember when we got a cordless. Big deal!
I'm constantly telling the kids to use their imaginations. The screens are such a big part of their lives now, and I hate it. I guess that means I'm officially old. HA!

  50. That winter print by Grandma Moses is so sweet! And I always love vintage Christmas ornaments. Those are especially pretty!

  51. You got some really cute stuff! that paint is so adorable, I'm sure your girls loved it! I also love shopping for antiques, actually there are several similar shops in my town, my sister in love owns one! haha so yeah I love shopping there and decorating my home with unique stuff :) Thanks for sharing your adventures and thoughts about technology! I invite you to visit my blog and if you like it as well, let me know if you would like to follow each other to stay in touch.

  52. My parents still have a working rotary phone at their house. I think you are doing a wonderful job keeping your beans connected to the real things in life. I sure hope to do the same for my grandson! I have the same Grandma Moses painting that I hang up every winter season!

  53. I've felt the same about my blog from time to time. Sometimes I little my inner introvert take over and wonder whether or not there is any need for more to post anything about my life online, even though my blog is such a tiny glimpse into my personal life :-) Also like you, I've found so many inspiring places through blogging though, learnt how to do things I wouldn't have otherwise known and also discovered so many like minded people. There is good and bad to everything, including technology I suppose :-)
I've been thinking about way I can build my own blog into a more inspiring, useful place of information and resources for people so that it has more of a purpose....aside from the one it serves as a creative outlet for my love of photography :-)

I love that last image! I'd happily take it home :-)

  54. My parents used to have such a black phone in the kitchen in the past when I was not yet married, a long time ago. I too love old and new things, I think that's the best to keep our balance. Love your vintage coloured Christmas balls and that winterprint is so pretty for this time of year.

  55. Dear Nicole, you are so lucky to have shop close to you where you can get great and affordable antiques! I share your love for vintage or antique things. There is just something special about them, that is hard to describe. Often I find the quality of antique and vintage items is so much higher, than what you can find nowadays and that simply is appealing to me. The love, time and creativity that goes into handmade things is hard to beat anyway. They just radiate something positive, individual, charming, sweet, unique, the list could go on. No wonder that people feel drawn to them, they just reach right into your heart.
I just thought today for myself, that I would like to bring a little bit more love and warmth into our house, too, and autumn and winter is the perfect time for such an undertaking. I am looking forward to doing a bit of thrifting and antiquing myself. Hopefully I find some affordable pieces that speak to me! Warm regards,
    Christina

  56. We had a phone just like that, why did we ever give it away! I can tell that you are gearing up to Christmas in quite the nicest way with a little bit of old and new, made and loved. :-)x

  57. I still have an old rotary phone (from the 70's) by my bed! My folks have the original Shiny Brite ornaments, still... love the Scandinavian/Russian tray and the prints. Yeah, the old things make me happy too!

  58. I totally agree with you, It is ok some technology and some of the old things are much better, all is good if you give a good use to it. And specially for the little ones it's important a good touch from the olden days, I think it's more much helthier a good dose of running around and jump up and down rather than too much sitting and watching a screen.

    Have a great week!

  59. Nicole.....I struggle with these things also. I chose to write my journal as a blog b/c I thought it might be less apt to be destroyed in fire or something (God forbid). I struggle with influx of technology also. It can be so overwhelming. I have enjoyed reading other people's blogs and writing. It has taught me a lot. Those Christmas ornaments brought happy memories because my parent's had those same ones once upon a time. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family. They are at such a magical age. Enjoy your New Years. We are off to Midland to visit old friends. Cheers. xo
