moss in a box and a view

Ok, so who knew that a box, rocks, moss, people, and animals could entertain kids for hours?!?!

In a normal household these moss boxes can be used with deer and other sweet creatures as centerpieces for the holidays....but.... for us it's all about play because that moss would never stay in that box!

And here is the view into our garden room...

We got a little tree and put him in our red ice bucket.
Some branches, berries, pinecones, and stumps from the yard add a bit of the garden to the vignette.

And big colored lights will always have a home at our house!

Happy making, baking and growing today!!!
And a very Happy Thanksgiving to each and every one of you!!!

  7. So delightful to see children who can be entertained with the simplest of items. That's where the imagination gets a workout. We used to play with my Mom's spools of thread when we were kids. Good memories.
Your garden room looks so lovely and festive, especially with your snowfall. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your beans and extended family. Stay warm and safe.

  10. Oh so pretty Nicole, the garden, and the miniature garden both in equal measure. I love how Mary and Jesus are entertaining a gnome or dwarf - only saw his back view!. Your actual outside garden is so pretty with its dusting of snow. xx

  11. Oh I am in love with your new garden room! And it is so nice you can see it from your dining room too! I hope your kids are feeling better. You find the cutest ways to entertain your kids. I think my little guy came down with the flu today. I hope we all don't fall like dominoes. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

  13. That moss 'n rocks box is such a great idea! I always wanted a nice "serious" nativity scene for Christmas ... never happened. One year I picked up a set made by Playmobil. My kids loved it, and loved to arrange and rearrange all the characters and animals. I liked walking past it and seeing something changed every day. I miss all that "hands on" enthusiasm of little kids. Your outdoor room is a wonderful idea. I always thought of stringing lights around our patio where only we would see it ... there's a certain pleasure in having little "secret" Christmassy things outdoors isn't there? Have fun with your decorating Nicole and keep those beans busy!! Wendy x

  16. Great post as ever. I love the idea of a little scene in the garden. I will admire yours though because the chickens would scratch ours to pieces and they would not have the same creative appreciation as me or you. Great work lady. Jo x

  18. I loved your moss box and the backyard decorations are great. I always decorate my back yard because I can enjoy it from our four seasons room and I don't ever see the front yard (which is decorated too). Very nice post! Stopping by from the Wonderful Wednesday party.

  20. I've never seen a moss box before. That's really cool and I love the religious figures in it, it's like the Nativity in the forest instead of the barn. :)

  21. Hi Nicole, I think your kids made far better use of the moss box playing with it than just having it as a centerpiece base for the holidays. How nice that they can be entertained for hours as you wrote with something that simple and natural. So much better than TV or Play Station games! Wishing you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

  29. Very cool! This reminds me of when the kids and I made terrariums with mosses one summer in the Upper Peninsula. Have you ever been there? Lots of different mosses to play with.

  33. I have read other posts where people have let their children build gardens like this for them selves. Some were fairies, and one was a farm, thanks for sharing on Tuesdays With a Twist, hope you will join us again

  35. I think I'll try this with my grandson. We had something similar when my kids were young. A whole nativity scene. My son liked to have the camels and wise men at the edge of the table. He would move them a little bit closer every day.
