where diggers dig and fairies fly

I have been plugging away on the decorations for our upcoming party.  The beans' excitement makes the late night makings possible, as does a hefty dose of caffeine in the morning!

Where diggers dig and fairies fly is the theme for their upcoming garden birthday party.  The little guy is usually  outside with his diggers, moving dirt back and forth for hours on end.  And with the oldest bean liking wings, fairies was the natural way to go!

Sticking with "using what I have," I was able to convert an old frame into a chalkboard.  I figure it will be fun to write on for special occasions.  And here are the mushrooms for the party.

The tops of the mushrooms are made out of a light weight clay and the bases are just cones that I sprayed brown.  They were fun to make and add a bit of the garden to our little side board.  Now if I get a little done every night I will be in good shape for their big day!

*On a final note, our good friend Julie from Being Home has switched to WordPress so she has a new domain name that I would like to pass on in case you couldn't find her.  So here she is..... beinghomedecor.com
And for those of you that don't know this sweet gal, you should pop on over and pay her a visit when you get a chance.  She is one talented lady!!!

All the best this weekend!
Happy baking, making and growing!!!

  1. What a fun theme for the party. I love that you are "using what you have". The media pushes us to "buy, buy, buy" and then throw away.

  2. I like the first picture of your little guy digging in the dirt, he looks like my grandson who is always outside playing with his cars and digging machine in my garden..... You made lovely mushrooms and the theme sounds so nice. Wish you all a lovely garden birthday party!

  4. You're off to a great start Nicole! The mushrooms look great :) My son was very much into digging when he was small too, and especially loved tractors. The shot of your son in the dirt brings back fond memories of my son & his pal out in the garden with their little trucks driving over roots & dirt ;) Have a great time with the party! Wendy x

  5. My little guy was doing the exact same thing with toy tractors, then I found the bathroom sink filled with soil and a mini plough! I am glad to see he is not the only one! Love, love the mushrooms, they are just brilliant as is the party theme. Very imaginative.

  8. What a wonderful mom you are. I miss those days of creating magic for my children. Lucky for me it seems we will be visitng the adorable grandchild at Halloween and if there is time he and I can make some little ghosties. The garden room is looking great. Thanks for reminding me about climbing hydrangea.

  13. Wow, I remember the days of being motivated for birthday parties like that. The Girl is turning six next month and I'm already dreading it. Which sounds horrid, but I just feel like there's no extra energy right now. AND she wants a Barbie cake. Kill me now. The mushrooms are friggin' awesome. I can't wait to see the whole thing pulled together.

  14. Your son reminds me of mine when he was that age. Always wanted to be in the dirt with his trucks. They are born with those genes. Cute photos of your sideboard still life. xo Jenny

  24. I'm sure you will have a wonderful party and the beans will be thrilled. I remember the intensity of the joy that my kids had when there was a kid-oriented party and the joy was infectious even to grumpy adults. You are putting a lot of creativity into this and I think the beans will appreciate it.

Your son with his trucks reminds me so much of my boys at that age.

  28. What a great idea for a party! I love making our kids' parties. When they were little, we had to do parties in the morning, because they were too tired with all the excitement if we left the celebration until later in the day. Have fun!
