side yard SOS

The kitchen table is where it happens.  The stories, the laughter, and the memories.  Which would explain my frustration with this.....

One of our main windows looks out on to our south facing side yard.  We pretty much look at our neighbor's house.  And yes that is our air conditioning unit too!  As I have said before, when you live in the burbs you have to deal with the "suburban circumstances!"

The patch to the left is our neighbor's and we are to the right.

The jungle is part of our veggie crop.  Tomatoes, peppers and carrots.

The idea is to create our own little secret garden that leads you to our garden gate.  I would like to take advantage of this sunny spot for more flowers.  And I have promised my 3 year old that our secret garden will have butterflies!

So with the three beans in tow today, we hit the nursery for some Captain Yews to act as a screening for the side yard.  Might I add that loading 3 small children in a minivan with 3 medium sized trees and a stroller is just hilarious!  I now know that I can do anything!

I won't bore you with my list of to do's here, but much of the transplanting has already begun thanks to J taking the beans to the park so that I could get digging!

Some lovely inspiration to push me along and to remind me to be patient!

It is going to take time to transform this space, but I am up for the challenge and ready to hit it!
Wish me luck!

  1. I love those trees you bought! I can just imagine you and the littles with your trees ;) hehe. Super woman!
I can't wait to see this transformation! Secret gardens are the best! In the last picture, I love that foamy green grass between the stones, quite ethereal feeling ;) great inspiration!

  2. So exciting!!!! I hear ya on the loading three kids into the van. Add anything else and it's just a comedy act.
I love that a couple of your pics are from Oregon Live. I knew we were doin' somethin' right. :)
Can't wait to see progress pics. And BTW, your a/c looks waaaaay better than our ghetto-ass one. Which is RIGHT next to our driveway door that everyone uses to come and go. Bleck. I keep dreaming of building one of the screens that are all over Pinterest.

  4. I'd pop a rose by the window but that's just how I'm thinking these days. The yews will look wonderful. I like the term suburban circumstances.

  5. They will grow and you will eventually have a privacy wall. :) I like your inspiration photos, but your photos are the ones that inspire me and I live vicariously through. ;)

  6. As always, you find such great inspiration photos, and I can picture exactly what you want to do with your side of the narrow walk. The last picture is perfect, and I really like the little screens. Good luck -- this will be a transformation that will make such a difference!

  9. ooh, secret garden! I've noticed a few butterflies in our yard the past few days, and it's making me want to plant something they like for them :)

  11. It is hard when you look into your neighbor's yard. We are the little guy with a 3 story on one side of us and 2 stories behind. We just get used to living in a fishbowl.

    Good luck with your trees.

I would have liked to see you, the beans and the trees - it sounds like a good title for a book.

  12. Love your ideas, Nicole! It's going to be beautiful! My favorites are the first and last photos. Loading 3 trees with 3 little ones shows your determination. That's half the battle! xo

  13. Looks like you are well on your way! For butterflies, you might want to consider Caryoptoris, also purple or yellow coneflowers.

  14. You can do it! When I learned how to unlock the front door with a baby on one hip and a bag of groceries on the other, I felt like Wonder Woman. How much sun/shade do you have and I'll send you butterfly plant ideas.

  16. Hi Nicole, I received my goodies in the mail and can't wait to get started on reading that book and then of course paying it forward! :D Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you... what you must have been thinking of me! I was without Internet for a week and am just getting back and catching up. I love the beauty goodies and am going to experiment with everything to see what I would like to order! I still can't believe I won the giveaway... not usually that lucky :D
I love the side garden inspiration... it is like I am learning very quickly this summer with my own gardening adventures... patience is key because it all takes time. Time to get it all planted and then more time for everything to fill in!
Good luck with your project and can't wait to see photos of your progress!
Hugs and enjoy the weekend and again thanks for the goodies!

  17. Sounds like my kind of outing! :) I'm sure you will create a beautiful oasis over there. The AC is tricky bc it's right by the door. I was able to put 6 foot lattice around my AC and screen off an area for garbage cans as well, but I don't have any windows on that side, so I didn't have to worry about blocking them. You've got the right attitude... it will happen little by little. :)

  18. The yews are so pretty, Nicole, and I just know that whatever you and the beans do, it will be great. My girls were almost 8 years apart in age, so there wasn't so much involved in an outing of any kind. Your describing the 3 beans and the 3 tress reminds me of when I was taking care of three grandchildren at the same time. I must have been a lot braver then. A simple trip to MacDonald's could be a major ordeal, with 2 toddlers and an infant, in carrier. It was exhausting, to say the least! I finally decided it was best to wait until Fridays, when my husband could participate. There is a reason God made our child-producing years to be in our youth. I can't wait to see your Secret Garden!

  23. Those trees will be beautiful to look at once you get them planted! Love the inspiration pictures... My two favorites are the one with the wooden gate/flagstone path/wreath and the stone path with mossy areas. :)
