thrifting for kids

It was a great day today!  My pal Mel introduced me to the Step By Step Resale for kids and boy was it cool!  Step by Step is a non-profit organization that offers educational activities for families in our area.

I have always enjoyed thrifting but this was on a much grander level for me!  To become a seller you register, wait to be approved, enter items on their database, tag and drop off your lot the day before the sale.  I worked the sale today and the scene was awesome!  My conversations with moms about reusing and not buying new was the general theme.  If you could just see the sheer amount of stuff you would ask why we buy new to begin with. Baby strollers, winter coats, bikes, books, bedding, Halloween costumes, toys (Oh the toys), shoes, clothing for all ages and the list goes on.

I have thought a lot about my general consumption over the past year, and after today, know that I will be doing things a bit differently for my family.

Overall, I bought 11 items and sold most of my baby clothes/equipment. I was able to purchase fall clothes for the girls, books, a Thomas game, t-shirts for my son and that Radio Flyer scooter for my bean.  Grand total....18 dollars!  That scooter cost TWO dollars!!!

Reusing and saving money feels pretty groovy!

  3. Sounds like a great days work, and probably lots of fun as well. I just have one question, how come it is not OK for us grown ups to wear cute clothes like those!! So unfair. The stripy jumper is lovely. Hope you have a fun rest of the weekend.

  4. What a brilliant idea. And the clothes you got are gorgeous! I have actually just done a clear-out here, my niece gets first refusal on mu daughters clothes and everything else is in big bags to go to the local charity (thrift) shops. That picture is incredible, the amount of clothes, I would end up with a car full!

  6. As a preschool teacher I was given so many things for my son, and I have always passed on his things to other family's. looks and sounds like a great day.

  8. I find shopping at the thrift stores is more fun because you never know what you'll find. You picked up some gorgeous clothes at great prices! Wendy x

  9. Reusing also means we're buying less clothing from sweat shops, because I'm guessing people often go cheap on kids' clothing (since they'll outgrow it so fast) which basically means lots of kids' clothing from sweat shops. Blech!

  10. That is such a wonderful idea! I wish there had been a store like that when my children were small. They outgrow clothes so quickly! I know this would be great for single moms, too.

  11. They do something similar here and every year I say I'm gonna do it, but just haven't yet. It's genius and there's no reason why kids should have brand new anything when you see the kinds of things you can buy used. I mean, crap, my attic alone is proof.

  12. I think we have something similar called the pass it on sale but I didn't think their prices were all that great. Used is used and they were charging as much as the tjmaxx type stores. And there were no two dollar scooters for sure - that is a score!! I like the idea of reusing. I'm about to throw a revolt on Halloween because of these piece of you know what costumes are so expensive. Why can't my daughter be Cinderella again?? $25 dollars to be a pink power ranger?? Ugh. Oh well. I hope you had a great weekend!!

  13. Steve and I were just discussing consumerism at dinner tonight. The subject came up about Apple constantly introducing a new iPhone and people thinking they need the newest version when the old version is in perfect condition.

I have not bought a single item of clothing or shoes since I retired. I could probably never buy anything new again - although my daughter will say I need to update my style.

I love that you bought second hand and sold items too - spending less and cleaning out the cupboards.

    Have a great week!

  14. What a great concept! My brother and sister-in-law are about to have their first baby, and they're trying very hard not to buy any "new" baby things. I wonder if they have something like this in their area - I'll have to research it for them. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods! ;)

  15. That looks just awesome! How nice you can sell your stuff too, such a great idea! I hardly ever by my kids new, we are blessed with friends that give hand me downs, and I am a total thrift store person, I wish I had a place like this! You got a great deal girl!

  17. Very interesting. I've gone to several consignment/resale shops, but never a full blown-out sale like this! I bet it was incredible watching everyone pick out what they wanted. And I've always thought that children (and especially babies) go through clothes way too fast to wear them out. Good going!

  18. Great Idea! It's a wonderful feeling paying for top of the line things for less. I know when our kids were younger, everyone had to buy the best for their kids. I think having the option is wonderful now. Consignments are a good thing!! Great Job!!

  19. WOW! Nicole just WOW! I would love to be able to thrift on the scale you can over there but Ireland just doesn't have it! I am hoping to do a car boot sale soon, just to off load some of the clutter but I am proud of the fact that all my boy's clothes so far have been second hand, homemade and thrifted! And we have passed them out along to other newborns. Helping other Mommas save pennies too!

$18... !!!! Well done you! That was some super thrifting my friend! Hazel x

  23. That is a brilliant day out, I could mooch there for ages. We are really lucky because I have two girls and my best mate has three which are older and we have a girl cousin too so I don't buy anything for the girls. It means we can spend money on holidays or ultimately it means I don't have to go to work to buy consumer stuff and that is important to us. Jo x
