breaking down the garden....garden room/shady stroll garden

When I garden I break down spaces into pocket gardens.  There are so many spaces that exist within the whole which in turn helps me stay focused as I work in the garden.  The shot below is an upper view of our back garden.  The dry stream bed is not in this photo but I feel this gives you an idea of the back yard and what we are working with toys and all.

Moving on to the front garden, these shots don't show my island bed or the other side of the driveway but again it gives you an overview of the main sweeping bed.

Our garden room is essentially our side yard.  Garden room sounds prettier to me and as many gardeners do, I'm in the process of naming the different pocket gardens that exist within our space.  Our garden room was once just an ally between our home and our neighbors' home.

We added a fence and and arbor to create the garden room.  Plantings are still a work in progress in this space but we do enjoy the privacy this addition gives us as our city plots are small.

I created the path out of brick and after laying garden fabric the pea gravel was added.

Along the left side of the fence we get full shade.  In time I hope that my climbing hydrangea will cover that whole fence.  Hydrangeas, hostas, solomon's seal, Japanese forest grass, ferns, lungwort, and hellebores fill the space.

As we move further into the space more of the shade garden comes into play.  Here is what it looked like when we moved in.

As soon as I added the path the beans took to it.  And the shady stroll garden was born!  They skip through this space now and ring the chimes that hang from the tree.  This bed consists of bleeding hearts, foam flowers, hostas, astilbes, lamium, annuals (impatiens and begonias)  wild ginger, ligularia, beauty berry, grasses, goat's beard, weigela, creeping jenny, knotweed, snow on the mountain, golden Japanese spikenard and coral bells.

It's fun to see how far different areas have come over time.  My goal is to make my way around our whole garden as the months go on.

Floral Fridays.....

The theme for Floral Friday this month was to choose a favorite garden quote.  This one resonates deeply with me......

via~ Rindy Mae

Life isn't always easy.  I read a quote once that said that bloggers blow sunshine at one another and I had to chuckle a bit.  I guess we do do that but then I really started to think about it and came to my own conclusion.  I think we collectively like to find the beauty in life even when the days are dark.  A good trait among us if I do say so myself!

As September sets in I can feel the change in my garden.  Plants are dying back, seed pods are forming and my annuals are carrying the color in most places.  Little signs that the new season is upon us.

I miss the newness of my garden but if I've learned one thing in life it's to embrace where you're at.  Change is bound to come.  To have bits of beauty in your life to lift the soul along the way is a pretty awesome thing.  So with that, I leave you with a song about change....

Blind Melon...Change

Make it a great one!

Floral Friday is a monthly photography project with different themes each month. This series is about fun and taking time out to smell the flowers. To play along next time, please email Trishie for next month's theme.

brick by brick

Isn't it true that things take time?  The garden takes time.  Most days you can find me out back combing my beds like a detective to see what has pulled through the winter.  All the while trying to consciously balance my garden obsession so the beans don't grow up thinking I was completely nuts!  But these days I am beginning to think that we're all a little nuts in our own ways, just trying to navigate this thing called life!

Last year I started work on our garden room but knew that the path had to change due to drainage issues and mud when strolling through.

After a ridiculous amount of leveling solid compacted dirt I was able to line the path with my pre-exisiting brick, lay down some landscape fabric, and fill with gravel.  Nope I'm not done.  With three beans sometimes 5 with the other little ones I watch, things get done in stages around here!

A lot of brown still!

Just so happens that this spot is completely a hit in the entertainment department.  Trucks and diggers spend most of their days scooping and dumping.

I am finding signs of life everywhere now!  My flower seeds won't be going in until May with temperatures still shifting most days.  And on the subject of seeds, I was able to find GMO free seeds from organic distributors on Amazon!  And very reasonably priced for those of you who are still wrapping up your seed orders.

The Cornelian Cherry showing bursts of sunshine....this tree is actually a Dogwood and its small colorful red fruit is a great song bird attractor.

My bare-root Autumn Bliss raspberry plants just arrived and in they went.

moss in a box and a view

Ok, so who knew that a box, rocks, moss, people, and animals could entertain kids for hours?!?!

In a normal household these moss boxes can be used with deer and other sweet creatures as centerpieces for the holidays....but.... for us it's all about play because that moss would never stay in that box!

And here is the view into our garden room...

We got a little tree and put him in our red ice bucket.
Some branches, berries, pinecones, and stumps from the yard add a bit of the garden to the vignette.

And big colored lights will always have a home at our house!

Happy making, baking and growing today!!!
And a very Happy Thanksgiving to each and every one of you!!!

MAKING Mondays....ghost garland {and some more pics of our garden room}

I started Making Mondays a while back to push myself to create at least once a week.  Ahhh..... let's just say that didn't happen!  One day the studio will be done, my stuff will be in one place, AND maybe I will have a few minutes to consistently create SO why not hang on to this idea for a bit longer!
Projects these days have to be somewhat quick or kid orientated.

When the flood hit our home my Ikea curtains got stained from the muck water.  I knew I could repurpose some of the material and was able to do just that with this project.

All of the materials I had lying around...

*styrofoam balls *pushpins *dried flowers and stems *sequins *rope, yarn, ribbon *white material
Using pins to attach the hanging loops and faces saved me a lot of time!

Instead of stringing my garland like I had originally planned, I hung the individual ghosts from our coat hooks.

Linking up with...

And here is what I accomplished today in the garden room...

lattice is installed and climbing hydrangea is planted

Autumn Clematis is safely transplanted to be grown over arbor

Catmint (Montrose White) and Miscanthus sinensis (Graziella) are planted under the window

Joe Pye Weed is planted..I have always wanted one of these guys!  Hope he blocks that meter soon!!

Japanese Forest Grass and Japanese Painted Fern transplanted today

It really doesn't take much to make me happy.  Just looking out the dining room window now brings me pure joy!

All the best in the week ahead friends!
Happy making, baking and growing!!!
