working it out around here

We have finally had some nice weather!!!   Today we were busy relocating some of our raised garden beds and the beans helped me drill our box together.  I made a special point to tell my daughter that she is a strong girl who can work a drill just as good as any boy!  The good thing about my little helpers is that they are amazing at amending the soil for me and finding worms to add to our boxes.

The lovely Jennifer from Three Dogs In A Garden  (her blog is beyond inspiring) sent me this gardening book for the beans.  It has so many project ideas for little ones in the garden.  The beans have already bookmarked the ones that they would like to try for this season!

And I would like to add that Jennifer was one of my first followers.  Always leaving me encouraging comments when I had none.  And for that I would like to say thank you Jennifer!

Busy working Beans!

So with a couple of jobs checked off the list in the garden here is a project that we knocked out inside.

A year ago we tackled our tiny bathroom.  (we are lucky to have one off of our bedroom) I enjoy being somewhat of a minimalist so a small bathroom actually works for us.  It is the size of a closet and its 1967ness was really starting to show.  With a broken toilet. rotted pipes, and funk growing in the shower we decided to fix it up.

Do you like our wire hanger rigging?!?!

With the space being so small it was a bit hard to even take a picture!  The little things that help us live in our small bath are hooks for hanging, trays for extra this and thats, and a large medicine cabinet over the sink for storage.  The old vanity was donated.  Its replacement is an extra small size that makes the space feel larger.

And the week has already been a good one!  I will be around to visit your blogs here in a bit as it has been a bit busy here!  At a doctors appointment today I was taken when I walked into the office building and was greeted by a stunning indoor garden.   It was a reminder that even when your mind is consumed with other things that it is important to slow down and look around you.

May your week be filled with beautiful things!

  1. Hi Nicole, so nice that you are gardening with your beans and let them actually do things in the garden themselves! They seem to be quite into it and enjoying spending time digging in the dirt.
Your bathroom make-over is stunning. So much more beautiful! Clean sleek look, I totally love it!
That indoor garden is amazing! It certainly transport you into a different world and is very soothing. I bet it helps to calm people down before they see the doctor. Wishing you a nice week!

  2. Hi Nicole - your beans are so sweet, helping Mama in the garden! They look like they are taking their jobs very seriously, too! Future gardeners for sure. A very worthwhile skill! I just love the coat your little one has on. I admire the fact that you are teaching them that gender doesn't matter.
Your bathroom makeover is such a beautiful transformation! I love the color scheme and it really does look spacious with your attention to design. Great job!
The indoor garden is really wonderful. It helps when you have to go to the Dr. to have something so beautiful to focus on.
So glad that you are finally getting some spring time weather. It is nice of your friend to send you the sweet book, too. I will stop over for a visit. Enjoy your lovely weather!
    Hugs xo Karen

  3. It is so funny that you mentioned slowing down because I just typed this quote today as part of an upcoming blog post -
"Learn to pause . . . or nothing worthwhile will catch up to you." Doug King

The beans are looking so cute!

  4. How nice to receive such a fun book for the beans. I'll have to remember to look for it at the library. I had the opposite experience with my son compared to your story of your daughter and the drill. I told my son that all my daffodils are my girls. And he frowns and says, "why can't they be boys?". Well why not? So we were out tonight picking my pink daffodils and just to see how serious he was, I asked Maddox if they were my boys. And he says yep!! Oh it cracks me up and it is so sweet that it mattered to him. That said, hallelujah for the weather warming up there!! You must be a super mom to get through a winter like what you just had. Have a great week - hope all is well, friend.

  5. Lovely pictures of your beans helping in the garden - I think you always see things in a different way when children are around when they notice things that you probably wouldn't. Well done with the bathroom - a definite improvement. I love that indoor garden too - so well planned out and would definitely take your mind off being at the doctors.

  8. The beans are so cute and you are right we all need to teach our Daughters they are strong and can do anything. I just adore what you did with the bathroom. I wished we had another one, maybe in the next house. We really stripped our back yard last year and in a few weeks will be putting in new raised beds.

  9. That's one pretty doctor's office.
Your little beans are so cute and I bet they are the best little helpers. My helpers were hard at work yesterday too. The dog was digging holes and the chickens were digging up the seeds I planted the minute I turned my back. Isn't it wonderful to finally be having some nice weather? At least until the rains come back in tomorrow. Until then - garden on!

  10. Forgot to say, the bathroom looks beautiful. I bet you are very happy with it. See, there is one good thing about bad weather, it helps us get our inside projects finished. I am learning that is the best way to cope with whatever weather comes along - always have an inside and outside project in the works.
    Have a nice week!

  16. I'm newly obsessed with Jennifer's blog - now I love it even more. My kids have been out with me, too. They've dug up hellebores seedlings and potted them for sharing and they planted radish, carrot and lettuce seeds. They love to be out in the dirt almost as much as Mom.

Your bathroom looks great. We have a small one off our bedroom as well, (although we STILL haven't tiled the shower since putting it in 7 years ago - ahem), and I've been giving it the stink eye over the last couple of weeks. I want to do something new to freshen it up. You're givin' me some motivation.

That is one seriously fancy doctor's office!

  20. It is a joy watching children actually doing something :) The pride they have when the seeds start to turn into little plants... And they don't need much for their imagination, just some mud, water and tools - brilliant!

  22. What good little helpers you have. I have a stack of good activity books from when my kids were small and I'm rereading them now to prep for the summer visit of the grandchild. His little red gardening gloves and wellies are waiting for him by the back door.

I love the tile in the shower too, it looks so beautiful, makes me want to tackle my tiny bathroom, it needs it desperately. I love the indoor garden too!

  27. Nicole, your bathroom makeover is lovely and amazing! The clear glass for the shower really opens up the room. Everything is perfect...except, you should really keep the hanger rigging for the toilet. It is a unique style and the beans could float little boats in the water. LOL! You know I am kidding? ;)

So sweet that Jennifer sent you that book. Your beans look too adorable gardening. :D

  34. Your beans look like they're having a blast! Digging in the dirt is such fun in the springtime. I still haven't checked out anything in my yard as there's still ice in the shadows. Your bathroom is impressive! Wow, what a change you've made! How nice to be greeted by all that sleekness. I love the shower tiles and glass wall/door. We have a tiny ensuite too, and took out a small wall and replaced it with a full glass wall & door. The space just opened up! Looks like a great week ahead for you Nicole :) Wendy x

  37. Those look like happy kids. :o) None of my students pranked me but I played a little joke on one of them so all is well. When my son was very small he loved using pumpkin stems as straws. Easy entertainment!

  38. Aww, love to see the kids helping with the garden! And, whoa--look at the change in that bathroom--great job!!

  39. What adorable kids you have. And your comments about the worms brought back memories. Our older son used to find worms and then adopt them as pets. He would carry one around, petting and kissing it. Sadly the worms did not necessarily survive all this love. I suppose we should have stopped him, from the worm's point of view it must not have seemed so cute.

  40. Oh you are a step ahead on the spring cleaning dolce vita preparednes I see! Oh and it's so true about kids and putting them to work in the garden! Husband and C were planting flowers this weekend and C was so happy to be helping, now every evening he wants to go to the front yard to "check on the flowers" so cute! They just want to be involved and do work. Maybe I will try to involve him in some cleaning :))))) And I love the new bathroom, we need to get on top of that, ours is def 80's style...

Her photos are gorgeous and provide so much inspiration and information. Your doctors office is a beautiful place to visit, too!
