Ok folks, I'm getting heavy in this post. As I continue to educate myself on GMO's in our food supply, I can not sit back any longer and remain silent. As a mother I want the best for my kids, as does EVERY other mom that I know. And that means knowing what is in our food.
Most of my readers are Earth conscious people that I admire for their beliefs and their love for the environment. Unfortunately, here in the US we are in the midst of something very frightening that stands to not only threaten our environment, but the health of our family and friends. Major corporations are using harmful pesticides that are altering our crops and killing our bees....
what's killing our bees
As a mother to a little boy who has many food allergies, I am blown away that there are not more people connecting the dots between these practices and the growing number of children inflicted with food sensitivities.

If there is another march I will walk. I will walk for ethical practices when it comes to our food supply.

Thanks for posting this. There's a definite connection but people do blindly seem to discourage it because of not wanting to change their diets or thinking it will be too expensive. There's a lot of ignorance, but hopefully people start educating themselves more to make wiser choices and stop supporting montesano. Xoxo
ReplyDeleteHope you had a wonderful weekend friend!
I don't understand how people don't connect the dots either. Here in Australia they want to introduce a new chemical that controls bugs by basically making their stomachs explode. And they think its safe to spray on OUR food??? Crazy!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week!

We eat very little processed food so I don't use too many on the list, but I use some of the products. I will have to do more research.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information.
Children seem to develop so much earlier than when I was a kid and I know part of it is the preservatives in the food and now you tell me it is in the pesticides used. Pretty scary.
that list is getting printed off and going up on the fridge as soon as I get home, thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteI am not too surprised to see some of the brands I use on that list, but seriously, my cranberry juice is on that list? That is disappointing. It is pretty scary that there is so much junk in our environment that is out of our control. But there are things we as moms can still do ~ like breastfeeding and shopping locally and organically. It takes a huge amount of time and effort but that is how women have fed babies for generations. In my experience, breastfeeding as paid off big time. But with so much crap in our food, I also wonder if we just got damn lucky. Thank you for sharing this info, friend!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a seriously long list of big-name companies. Scary.
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt that all of the food allergies and sensitivities that were UNHEARD of when I was a kid has everything to do with what's being put into our food. No doubt.
So true - I try not to eat too many processed foods and never GMO corn because it's in just about everything you pick up. So many people think if the package says "natural" it's OK. But in reality it can mean "natural chemical pesticides" LOL Hopefully a lot more people are connecting the dots - I'm seeing more and more real organic foods in the stores these days.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness here in Europe GMO's are not allowed, however FEEDING the cows with GMO stuff is ok. Ugggh so organic meat is the only option. The supermarket feels more and more like a mine field!
ReplyDeleteI think you are probably right, in that the additives in our food supply are related to food allergies. I'm sorry to hear about your little fellows allergies. My 16 yr. old grandson has had food allergies his entire life. He almost starved to death as an infant because he would throw up everything he ate.He would scream day and night, but the pediatrician he was seeing then said he could NOT have allergies because he was less than a year old. We were certain he must have. He was put on strong reflux medications, when he was just a tiny infant and was 12 when a doctor at MCG , thankfullly, diagnosed his problem as EE, which could only be diagnosed by doing scans inside his esophagus and biopsies. When he doesn't stick to a very restricted diet, the white blood cells in his esophagus and even in the intestines, multiply and he develops something that looks like furrows on his scans and biopsies. This can lead to cancer. I worry bout it because, from time to time he gets off track. He is very tall( over 6 ft.) and getting taller, all the time now. He looks the picture of health. Sorry I got so long-winded. Hope your week is going well!
ReplyDeleteI find the thought of GMO foods to be really disturbing. That said, I probably need a list of Australian food companies to avoid!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! It is so scary what they do that most people don't know about! You are awesome Nicole! Thanks for the great information!
ReplyDeleteGood work spreading the word on these issues. I think you will only get a groundswell when people hear about these issues from their family, friends, and neighbors.
ReplyDeleteYes, we try to avoid the GMO's too. That's why we grow our own...and try to frequent the health food stores for the rest if we can. Thank you for this post!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Good on you xo
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Nicole! I do believe GMO corn is the reason for the honey bee and butterfly decline. They engineer pesticide right into the plant. We need to stop it. Good for you for bringing this to light. xo
ReplyDeleteThis is from Christina at Creating My Own Garden of the Hesperides. She couldn't leave a message for some reason so asked if I could try. Jason
ReplyDeleteGreat, great post! You understand why we in Europe get angry when the US government say they won’t even accept that GM products are labeled. Most British supermarket chains don’t have any GM in their own products. US consumers need to start voting with their wallet (pocket book?) DON’T BUY GM, if there is no market they will stop growing these plant
Nicole, I could not agree more. I get weird looks from people sometimes when I mention GMO. They fully do not understand what it means. When I say, "Genetically Modified Organism" they get a freaked out look on their face. I think on packaging they should spell out what GMO stands for. Heck, my daughter got grossed out when I told her what it stood for.
ReplyDeleteA lot of companies are bowing down to Monsanto (evil empire).
Check out this young lady! She is only 14!

One reason for our choice of location is to provide clean food for our children and grandchild in the city. Autism spectrum disorder also has a terrifying increase in the last twenty years which I feel may have something to do with all the chemicals. Early onset puberty is such a burden for children. Keep writing your politicians. Turn up at meetings. Ask the hard questions. Demand accountability. We can all do something.
ReplyDeleteI just heard something on NPR that said cocoa as a crop has the second highest rate of pesticides and most comes from Africa where and is farmed by child labor. Boy, I sure thought I was doing things right, but I obviously have a lot to learn.
ReplyDeleteI am totally with you. I walked in the march aganst mansanto in chicago recently this year. I learned a lot from the people who attended and one of which is this free mobile app called BUYCOTT.
ReplyDeleteYou select "campaigns" you care about ... like GMO, and they associate the appropriate companies NOT to purchase from...and additionally you can see what the lineage is of companies. Now this is the BIGGEST kicker since a lot of brands out there "look" healthy, but they are actually associated to Kraft or Pepsi etc. big no no's. I recently realized that a Super healthy looking brand like odwalla juices are actually a pepsi brand and they have been known to say that they are GMO free but REALLY arent. It's TRULY not unless it has that label. They can say whatever they want in regular text... but it frustrates me to know that a lot of products hiding in natural food stores are really just linked sub brands of the guys on the list you have there.
I don't always feel like we can do much to affect the government or big companies... but I do feel empowered by voting with my money... -M
One of my best friends brought this to my attention a while back... Disgusting. I could rant but you've said it all (much more civilized than I ever could).
ReplyDeletei'm with you on this one for sure!!
