back to beading

It was the summers in the old bead shop that I remember best.  Back before I had kids, or was even married, I would go to my spot to hunt for beads.  The shop was on the second floor of an old building and the stairs going up were dark and narrow.  But it was the treasure at the top of the stairs that I remember the most, for when you opened the door you were blinded with the most magnificent colors which hung from ceiling to floor.  Beads!  Strands and strands of every size to any color you could imagine!  Old wood bowls holding trinkets and stamped metal pieces from all over the world covered the floors.

The woman who ran the store had a story all her own.  She was eccentric and enjoyed telling the stories behind each strand of beads hanging from those walls.  Her travels to other countries to find the best selection and the pieces she made for various movies were the tales that I remember her sharing as she sat and taught me how to make some of my very first necklaces.  She was a teacher.  The love she had for jewelry spilled out on to every person who came through the door.   The store closed down several years back and is currently only online.  Buying things online will never measure up to those experiences i had in that shop.  I hope there will still be unique shops around for my kids as they explore their passions.  You can check out the shop here...  Eye On Design

I use waxed Irish linen for my necklaces

Do you have a favorite old shop?  I hope it is a great day wherever you are!

I don't have a favorite old shop but I do have a favorite town to shop and it is so much fun to hop from store to store.

  3. Your necklace is just beautiful. I love the simplicity of it and yet it makes a grand statement.
I can't think of one particular shop. There are many over the years that my mind travels back to, many fond memories of shopping you have conjured up.

  5. I love your work ;) I love the story. I do have a couple places... the old bookstore that would get hot and smell of paper in the summer, and I got stung by a bee inside. Lol and a few others. I grew up in bellingham and if you're ever there, you must go to Fairhaven. There's lots of shops there and a bead store too ;)

    1. I didn't know that you grew up there! Oh how I would love to go!!! That bookstore sounds perfect...minus the bee! Ha! Love bookstores! We used to have a couple of really cool ones in town here but they shut down as well. Have a great evening! I'm sure you are cooking up something wonderful!

  6. That shop sounds like an awesome place to explore! We have a few vintage shops left around, but it seems most of them have all closed their doors. I miss wondering around poking into every little corner. You are quite talented with your work! I could never have the patience.

  10. Love that necklace! My favorite shop right now is a total junk shop in our little town. She buys estates so you never know what she will have in stock. Sometimes it is absley nothing I would want and sometimes I find good stuff.

  12. Oh, Nicole, thank you for sharing your story and your beautiful work at my link party! I love hearing the history behind your creative inspiration and process. I used to have a favorite quilt shop where I could get lost for hours on a weekend (before kids!) among the piles of fabric and notions. It has now closed down, which is probably good for my budget and fabric storage :) but I certainly miss it!

  13. I love that the woman who ran the store had stories to tell about each strand of bead. She's obviously very passionate about her work. Such a shame the store is only available online now.

    1. Hey lady! Thanks for popping by! I think it is always a shame when these cool shops can't afford to stay open....such a bummer. I hope you are having a fabulous week in your part of the world!

  14. I have very fond memories of a tiny 'One Thousand Villages' shop near my mom's friend's house. If I was good, I could go to the store on my own, and I found all those strange things from all over the world so fascinating. I spent hours there, inspecting every single thing. We never had a lot of money, but once my mom let me pick something out, a funny little wooden box from India, and every time I open it up I still remember all the wonder of a child thinking of someone away across the world making such a box by hand.

  16. Love the pendant especially! I have a favourite bead shop in Streetsville (a little village that has become part of the city of Mississauga). The owner not only sells beads, she gives lessons too. I always spend too much money whenever I go there.

  17. Mine was a favorite fabric store that went out of business. There are still a few fabric stores spread across the county, but that was my favorite. They had a picnic table sized bin filled with buttons of all different colors and sizes. I would plop my son down in front of it while I looked for fabric or craft items. He would sort the buttons by color or size or whatever his grouping was that day. I think back then I must have visited the store at least twice a week. I can buy the craft items on-line from them, and I do, but I miss the tactile experience. And, the clerks knew me and my son by name.

Thanks for bringing back a fond memory. I will have to ask my son if he remembers playing with those buttons.

  18. Nicole, I totally love your story about jewelry making. I get the feeling from reading this that it was not just having a desire to make wonderful jewelry pieces, but the manner and place in which you were taught. I truly believe these kinds of experiences are a part of making us the way we are. How great that you had this wonderful and eccentric lady for a teacher! I agree that these types of experiences are fast becoming extinct and that we need to be alert for learning experiences for our children and grand-children. When I read your post, I felt as if I were walking, with excitement, right up those dark stairs and into that fabulous shop. Thanks for sharing!

  19. I love the story, I felt like I was with you! You have a talent for writing. And, I love the necklace! Totally pretty! I don't have a memory of a specific shop, but I remember some rustic shop when I was a kid on some vacation, it had a very cool feel to it and I remember loving it!

  20. Beautiful necklace!! I love to make jewelry but it seems I never find the time anymore. I try to keep 50 pieces in my etsy store at all times, but I can never seem to get/stay there! I guess because I am too busy looking at all the jewelry magazines I buy and oohing and ahhing!! But spring is here and summer will soon follow, here in the desert you get stuck indoors during the heat and maybe I will find time to make more jewelry! You certainly inspired me!

  22. A lovely story and so beautifully written. The jewellery is absolutely gorgeous. You are so right - online shopping will never match up to sensation of visiting a favourite shop. My favourite is an old-fashioned sweet shop filled with row upon row of jars of sweets which I recognise from my childhood. Strangely enough, my children have inherited my love of sweet shops. I am one proud parent!
