looking for the silver lining

We woke up this morning to water pouring into our house.  It is a helpless feeling as you are scooping water up with buckets, just to watch more rush in.  Roads and schools are shut down around us due to the massive storms that have been tearing through our area since yesterday.  And with more on the way, we have had to jump into action to protect our home from further damage.

Yes it is hard to lose all of your stuff.  Hey, but that's all it is.  STUFF!  My kids are healthy and we are blessed.  Needless to say, I will be focusing on getting us cleaned up around here as we are probably going to have to take out some walls.  Who knows, maybe we will end up with something we like better when all is said and done!

I hope to be back with some serene garden photos and projects in a couple of weeks but until then, life is calling.  Peace

  1. Oh dear! I'm so sorry! I have been there! It's awful ;( I hope it lets up and doesn't damage your home any further sweet girl!
I can't tell in your picture, but if you have carpet I suggest pulling it up and throwing it away ASAP. It's the worst and you want to get away from any chance of mustiness and mold growing. Our shopvac helped get most of the water out of about half our house when this happened, but we didn't get rid of the carpet fast enough.
I hope you don't have anymore flooding. You have a great attitude about this though... It is just stuff and you still have your beautiful family!
xoxo- if there's anything I can do let me know!

  13. I hope there isn't too much damage! We are getting the southern end of the storm here in west Tennessee -- just started raining about an hour ago, but I think the bulk of the rain is missing us (so far at least). But the temp has dropped from 80 degrees to 59 just in the last hour.

  26. I am praying for you and I am praying for Boston. You are the second blogger who mentioned the problems in the midwest.

You are so right about it all being STUFF. Take care of the beans.

  29. So sorry for your flooding. I've never had a house with a basement exactly for that reason. I have never been fond of basements since a child, when my Grandfather's was mostly a dark creepy stone wall basement (probably more like a root cellar) and I have avoided them ever since. I often wish I had more room for storage, but then I would just collect more stuff than I already have. Hope things get better for you and you don't have too much damage. Look forward to seeing your posts when things are sunnier at your house.

  30. Well, I'm a little behind on things this week. I'm so sorry to hear of your flooding troubles ... water can be such a pain! We had a huge flood in the basement one year when the snow began melting, and it poured right through the concrete basement blocks for days! I know exactly how you feel when you're faced with incoming water and no way to stop it. I hope the flooding goes down quickly ... if you have access to very large fans (industrial) they're a great help to dry the walls and concrete. Carpets have to go in the garbage. At least you'll probably only have repairs to the inside of your home. We had to have major digging outside down to the foundation base to correct the weeping tiles ($$$$). I think yours will be the cheaper solution. Keep your chin up and stay positive, it all gets sorted in the end. Wendy

  31. Oh my gosh, I cannot believe this! My heart is hurting for you, but I know that you will make the best of this! I know how it feels and there will be days where everything is so chaotic and you just want to give up. Know that you will have support and that everything will come full circle! You will prevail! Praying for you and your family unceasingly!

  33. I know this is late, but Oh, my goodness! I feel so sorry for you, Nicole! I hope you have gotten all of the water out of your house, and that most of your things are not damaged. You have the right attitude, though. Stuff is stuff, and it can always be replaced. People, not so much.

  34. Oh no! So sorry Nicole! That sucks. :( We had a leak in our water hose that goes to our washing machine...20 years ago when I was 7 months pregnant with our first child. AND we were away on vacation when it happened. That was not fun to come home to! We had to tear out walls 4 feet up from the floor in the most of the house plus floor etc. It was a mess, so I can relate. I hope you don't have too much damage. Love your attitude about it though. :)

  38. Sadly, I can so identify with what you are going through. Our house sits just above the water table, so every spring there are issues. Take care Nicole!

  41. Nicole, I've been off the computer for a little while and just returned to hear your news from Lynn (Mimi Mine). I am so sorry for the stress of this flooding, but I truly admire your spirit of keeping things in perspective with regards to "stuff". My family's home was flooded when a sewage line broke when I was in college...disgusting. We lost a lot of "stuff" then too, but life goes on. Glad to hear you and your beans are safe. Praying a smooth recovery for you and your home!
