Utilitarian design came to mind when I was thinking of my project for Monday.

having regard to utility or usefulness rather than beauty, ornamentation, etc.
I knew that I needed a trellis for the barn. For those of you that aren't familiar with the "barn" you can read about it here. The barn is getting a makeover this spring with a fresh coat of paint and new plants to adorn it. I'll be growing morning glory from seed and hope to grow it over the the top of the barn.

Since I want to spend my money on plants, I needed to re-purpose something to make the trellis. So I grabbed a bunch of dry cleaner hangers from the closet and got to work. I laid them out and worked on creating an interesting pattern as well as overlapping areas so the plants will have something to hold on to as they grow.
I used....6 hangers, thin wire, and left over bronze spray paint
laying out the pattern
wiring the pieces together
spray it bronze and here it is...
I fastened the trellis to the barn with nails.

I will be doing a follow up to this post so you can see how the barn shapes up!

Clever lady! And I see snow. I would love a barn like that, or indeed a greenhouse. I would go with a pretty blue with cream trim. Can't wait to see the transformation. xo
ReplyDeleteI would love a greenhouse one day! But for now the old shed will do!
DeleteI wish so much that I had space on our little lot for a little house. It would be so much fun to decorate - in and out. One of my neighbors does have one so maybe there is enough space...someday!
ReplyDeleteOurs needs some help structurally..one day we would like to pour a slab for it.
DeleteOh how creative and economical to make a trellis from wire hangers. That is so cool!
ReplyDeleteI love anything that is both utilitarian and beautiful, like cake stands, vases, mirrors etc. It is a good word to know too.
Thanks lady!!
DeleteOh and I'd paint the barn a lovely shade of green that blends in with the greenery of your yard with a white trim.
ReplyDeletePale blue/grey with butter trim is my vote ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks you! Hope your having a great weekend!
DeleteOh good idea with the trellis! I like the deep blue and cream trim myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lady!
DeleteBlue and butter I think! Your shed will look beautiful when done :-)
ReplyDeleteSarah x
Thank you!!! Can't wait for warmer weather to get it started!
DeleteWhat a smart idea! My morning glories get so heavy on my trellis. I sometimes use 10 lb fishing line to string them along the places I want them to go. I pick the last shed. Probably because thats the color of my shed! lol Glad i stumbled across your blog!
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks for popping by! I am ready with some large hooks on top of the shed for support...just need it to grow up!!!
DeleteHow creative and pretty! I like the pale blue gray with butter trim! :)
ReplyDeleteSusan
Ha! I like that one too! I think it may accent my plants nicely!!
DeleteSo creative!!! I couldn't imagine what you were going to do with coat hangers, but I'm impressed. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteCindy
Thanks Cindy!
DeleteHey, that is brilliant! I now know what to do with my excess of coat hangers.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jason!
DeleteTruly amazing! Who would've thought of that?! So creative!
ReplyDeleteNancy
Thank you Nancy!
DeleteThe coat hanger idea ROCKS, clever girl! With that going for you already, I'm sure WHATEVER color you pick for the barn will be fabulous. Happy Monday - package on its way to your house as of yesterday - Tanya
ReplyDeleteThanks Tanya!! Looking forward to it!!! You have a great day!!
DeleteLove your home made trellis! It will be gorgeous with morning glories growing up the side of your barn. I think if you want the barn to disappear into the background, paint it a dark green. But if you want it to stand out as a feature, go with that beautiful blue!
ReplyDeleteHey Holley...That is what I think as well...now I'm trying to think of what color will compliment the foliage.
DeleteAt first I thought the coat hangers linked together looked, um, well . . .
ReplyDeleteBut seeing it finished on the barn wall, it is perfect. It came out really great, unique, interesting, artistic and free! Love it.
I vote for the first photo's color on the shed, the dark green with light trim.
Ha I know I know! My husband's response was similar..coat hangers? This girl has to stay on budget! Thanks lady!!
DeleteI love this idea!!! Who cares what it looks like - when you're out enjoying the garden, it will be covered in plants! Totally stealing this for my yard.
ReplyDeleteI'm almost ALWAYS a green girl, but I'm diggin' the blue and white and I think the grey-blue would be nice too. Heck, a fresh coat of paint ANY color will look good!
That is so darned clever! I'm pretty ruthless about getting rid of wire hangers, but they seem to breed and multiply despite my best efforts (and we don't send anything to dry-cleaning, so I have NO IDEA where these things come from) - I'll have to see if I can round some up. I can always use another trellis!
ReplyDeleteOn the shed, I like the first 2 photos. I would have to see your full setting to venture which I would prefer. How nice to have a cute shed!
(by the by, clicked on from your comment on Mindy's blog -- love what I see, so I'm a new follower!
wow! great idea! morning glories are a weed around here, but they sure look pretty in those pictures. I vote for the pale gray with butter trim!
ReplyDeleteThat is an AWESOME idea!!! Seriously!!! I'm definitely trying it... I love the dark green. :)
ReplyDeleteSo creative! It looks great on the barn and I vote for the blue with white trim, but I am always partial to blue!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great creative way to make a trellis! it looks awesome. You have a lot of fun and wonderful inspiration in this post! Thank you for sharing at TTF.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteVery clever. I'm putting this in my idea file. I liked your first choice in colour.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the mood to paint something cream with periwinkle blue trim. My brother made a play house for his grandchildren out of a shed. He put double doors on the side which could open wide in the summer. The kids love it.
I would love to turn it into something fun but it's a bit beat on the inside. Just a spot for holding the mower and wheelbarrow for now. We hope to fix it in the future by building it on a slab...so for now it gets paint and some annuals!
DeleteI would love to see what your brother made by the way!!
DeleteOh my! I think I like the dark green with cream trim personally. I love that barn! And aren't you the creative little bee with that adorable trellis, and for free!
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping by my blog... I know, aren't those bunnies something! I agree that I love the more traditional look of a spinning wheel but alas wallet will dictate... will keep you posted as the saga continues! LOL
Hugs,
Beth
I'm partial to the dark blue with cream, but they are all beautiful. You did a wonderful job with that trellis! What a clever way to repurpose and save a buck! I wish I had your green thumb, but alas, that area is not one in which I am gifted. Look forward to seeing the finished barn!

I love the blue with cream trim! I will really be looking to your blog for inspiration this spring for our house's exterior. It needs lots of landscaping! Can't wait to get started! If only Spring would hurry and get here!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Love the trellis from hangers... ingenious! :)
ReplyDeleteThe trellis looks AWESOME! I would have never thought it could look so neat! I love the pale blue paint and butter trim, I think the beautiful flowers and plants around it would just pop!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever little trellis idea! You would never guess that it was made from coat hangers. The shed inspiration is terrific too!
ReplyDeleteMy son is doing this for his recycle project at school this year!! Its a win/win/win for me.... he gets his project done, I get rid of my husband's wire hangers from his uniforms, and I get a nice trellis for my garden!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
