MAKING Mondays {garden trellis}



Utilitarian design came to mind when I was thinking of my project for Monday.

having regard to utility or usefulness rather than beauty, ornamentation, etc.

I knew that I needed a trellis for the barn.  For those of you that aren't familiar with the "barn" you can read about it here.  The barn is getting a makeover this spring with a fresh coat of paint and new plants to adorn it.  I'll be growing morning glory from seed and hope to grow it over the the top of the barn.

Since I want to spend my money on plants, I needed to re-purpose something to make the trellis.  So I grabbed a bunch of dry cleaner hangers from the closet and got to work.  I laid them out and worked on creating an interesting pattern as well as overlapping areas so the plants will have something to hold on to as they grow. 

I used....6 hangers, thin wire, and left over bronze spray paint
laying out the pattern
wiring the pieces together
spray it bronze and here it is...

I fastened the trellis to the barn with nails.




I will be doing a follow up to this post so you can see how the barn shapes up!

    Clever lady! And I see snow. I would love a barn like that, or indeed a greenhouse. I would go with a pretty blue with cream trim. Can't wait to see the transformation. xo

      I would love a greenhouse one day! But for now the old shed will do!

    I wish so much that I had space on our little lot for a little house. It would be so much fun to decorate - in and out. One of my neighbors does have one so maybe there is enough space...someday!

    Oh how creative and economical to make a trellis from wire hangers. That is so cool!

    I love anything that is both utilitarian and beautiful, like cake stands, vases, mirrors etc. It is a good word to know too.

    Oh and I'd paint the barn a lovely shade of green that blends in with the greenery of your yard with a white trim.

    What a smart idea! My morning glories get so heavy on my trellis. I sometimes use 10 lb fishing line to string them along the places I want them to go. I pick the last shed. Probably because thats the color of my shed! lol Glad i stumbled across your blog!

    Love your home made trellis! It will be gorgeous with morning glories growing up the side of your barn. I think if you want the barn to disappear into the background, paint it a dark green. But if you want it to stand out as a feature, go with that beautiful blue!

    At first I thought the coat hangers linked together looked, um, well . . .

    But seeing it finished on the barn wall, it is perfect. It came out really great, unique, interesting, artistic and free! Love it.

    I vote for the first photo's color on the shed, the dark green with light trim.

    I love this idea!!! Who cares what it looks like - when you're out enjoying the garden, it will be covered in plants! Totally stealing this for my yard.
    I'm almost ALWAYS a green girl, but I'm diggin' the blue and white and I think the grey-blue would be nice too. Heck, a fresh coat of paint ANY color will look good!

    That is so darned clever! I'm pretty ruthless about getting rid of wire hangers, but they seem to breed and multiply despite my best efforts (and we don't send anything to dry-cleaning, so I have NO IDEA where these things come from) - I'll have to see if I can round some up. I can always use another trellis!

    On the shed, I like the first 2 photos. I would have to see your full setting to venture which I would prefer. How nice to have a cute shed!

    Very clever. I'm putting this in my idea file. I liked your first choice in colour.
    I'm in the mood to paint something cream with periwinkle blue trim. My brother made a play house for his grandchildren out of a shed. He put double doors on the side which could open wide in the summer. The kids love it.

      I would love to turn it into something fun but it's a bit beat on the inside. Just a spot for holding the mower and wheelbarrow for now. We hope to fix it in the future by building it on a slab...so for now it gets paint and some annuals!

    Oh my! I think I like the dark green with cream trim personally. I love that barn! And aren't you the creative little bee with that adorable trellis, and for free!

    I'm partial to the dark blue with cream, but they are all beautiful. You did a wonderful job with that trellis! What a clever way to repurpose and save a buck! I wish I had your green thumb, but alas, that area is not one in which I am gifted. Look forward to seeing the finished barn!

    The trellis looks AWESOME! I would have never thought it could look so neat! I love the pale blue paint and butter trim, I think the beautiful flowers and plants around it would just pop!

    My son is doing this for his recycle project at school this year!! Its a win/win/win for me.... he gets his project done, I get rid of my husband's wire hangers from his uniforms, and I get a nice trellis for my garden!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
